The Star Property Fair 2014

The Star again successfully organized it's 12th property fair in G hotel and Gurney Plaza. I was looking forward towards the event as I thought it would develop much of my insight on new housing developments in Penang. However, it was more towards property for the investors as well as for the high end home seekers. Fortunately, there were many talks on various topics on property which really attracted my interest.

I was fortunate to be able to learn about Green Architecture in Feng Shui presented by Master David Koh. The talk was about how to utilise space and live with nature while at the same time developing housing areas which are nature friendly. For instance, what are the best angles of the slope that a house can be built, how do we do town planning with regards to the river flow, how the wind direction determines the structure of a high rise buiding etc. In this picture above, he was illustrating about space and designs of a house. You could read more on green buildings here

The golden proportion on how to design one's house.

Application of the golden rule on the floor plan

I also had to chance to learn about the effects of GST on property prices. The talk was delivered by accountant Richard Oon who spoke about the GST registered and non GST registered companies.

The slide which portrays the simple concept of GST in business

To sum it up, developers would have to increase the prices of the properties once GST is implemented since they cannot collect GST from the raw materials. As a result, the person at the end of the line, which would be the customer, has to absorb the increased cost of materials by paying more for the required property. (Raw materials would be taxed 5%).

As the fair progresses into it's third day today, I will be certainly looking forward to more of the talks that will surely benefit me in the future. The talks are FOC anyway, so why should I miss them =)

Escape Adventure Teluk Bahang, Penang

2 days ago my friends and I decided to give this place a try. It is situated at the northern (almost most norther) tip of Penang Island. As a local, I think it is not a bad idea to try out something in my backyard rather than go to the sorts of Sunway Lagoon. It took us a 30 minute drive from Gurney Plaza.

The car park was quite nicely designed with atap roofs. There was ample parking space perhaps due to the fact that there were less people during the weekdays.

The structure of the reception/ front counter is strikingly awesome. You do not have to book your tickets online if you are not going there in the peak season. You could have a view of the ticket pricing and FAQs on their website. They have quite a decent website. Anyway, we paid RM60 per person.

Basically the restrictions are for kids and heavily obese people but this board at the entrance simply listed down all the activities that can be found in the park.

A glance of the activities in the park. This is called Monkey Business and there are three levels with ascending difficulty. Level one shouldn't pose a problem but level two will need more endurance and courage. Not to mention being fit for the challenges, which will require lot of climbing and balancing skills. We did not try level three as we were quite tired after all the physical activity used.

Do not need to worry if you did not bring along the map you received at the entrance as there are many of these maps over the park.

The restrooms were well maintained.

No outside food is allowed in their premises. So literally you are forced to dine in the park and mind you, it's exorbitant. Well I would get back to lunch later.

One interesting thing that I find about the park is that the signboards they use are quite creative. Just look at this one at the dining area. It says feeding time. The theme of this park is actually to connect with nature, not connect to wifi. So as the name suggested, please do not ask for any wifi password =) In addition, we were being like 'animals' by participating in the activities. There were activities that require climbing (monkeys), flying fox, climbing up coconut trees, tarzan' rope and so on. Hence, lunch time is unsurprisingly known as feeding time.

This is the topup counter near the dining area. No cash transactions will be performed in the park besides this counter. They use a special debit card for all monetory transactions. But generally you only have to pay for food and water. (Yes, you can't bring water inside the park)

The escape debit card.

A wrist band is also available for rent at a price of RM5. It is used solely to store your belongings in your locker. I suggest rental of the locker as the park is only a per-entry basis. We stored our wallets, phones and water in the locker.

Some other interesting signboards that warn up about flying fox activities undergoing above your head. But there is nothing to worry about. Everything is very safe in the park.

The road from monkey business leading all the way to the back where you can find the tarzan's rope.

So we ordered Nasi Lemak for lunch. For god's sake it cost us RM6/pax for this not-at-all-interesting piece of lunch. As you can see, there is only rice, egg, 3 pieces of cucumber, nuts, some ikan bilis and sambal. You could easily obtain this for RM2 anywhere along the streets. Things are pretty pricey in here and I advice you just to have something simple or nothing at all. A bottle of mineral water of 1.5litres cost us RM4 anyway. So, just eat a little to prevent your stomach from grumbling but not too much as usual. After all, you are going for more physical activity.

Happy faces after filing up our tummies. We had lunch at 230pm. Once you had lunch, the chances are that you will be lazy to continue to enjoy the other activities as before lunch.

The absailing tower which we did not try out.

The tarzan's rope is quite fun if you are seeking some exciting experiences. It is about 3 stories high and the excitement comes from the swaying effect. But it was the sudden descend before the giant swing which caught all of us off guard. We ended up playing this thing twice.

Head and protective gear all set.

We finally decided to call it a day around 5pm as we were all exhausted from the whole-day's workout. We did not know they had plenty of bathrooms for us to shower before going home. There were a total of 5 bathrooms in the male bathroom. Hence, I asked the guard for the permission to get our stuff form the car in which he agreed. So we had a good bath before hitting the roads. Please note that all they provide is a bathroom with shower only. No soap (unless you want to use the soap for cleaning hands) or towels are provided, even if you have the money to pay for it.

This signboard is located in the souvenir's store. As told by the chief staff, there will be a water theme park opposite the road by the end of 2015. It is currently under construction. If they could produce something like in the drawings then it would be much better than the one in Sunway Lagoon.

In all, we spent RM69.25/pax for the whole experience. We were not allowed to hold cameras once we are involved in the activities and hence the lack of interactive photos of us completing the tasks. If you wish to be filmed, you need a friend to be stationed on the ground to capture the memories of the day. I would say it is a truely wonderful experience as we were able to enjoy many facilitiesuch as the 150 meter flying fox, absailing and tubby racer which we would never be able to try out unless you have been to the national service or in the military service. I have been to the national service but I still find this a memorable experience that you too, should not miss out while you are young. I even saw a young European boy as young as 6 years old in the park!

Working out

It was exactly 3 months after I sat for the professional exam M.D. UKM 2013/2014, yet I'm still jobless =( The most I could do is give a 'like' to my friends from UM (University of Malaya) who just started working last week. We finished our pro exam on the same day, yet, our fate was different. Thanks to the academic office of UKM for sending in our results late. I think because we missed the induction camp in late June and had to wait for the next one.

So three months, and maybe more to come down the line (damnit) has been a long one and I decided to hit the gyms. However, I could not be attached to one because I have yet to know where I would be working in. As such, I have been gym hopping using Groupon vouchers which grants me a month's access to the facilities. Membership prices are just a guide and are thus, not that accurate. So far, I have been to four, so let's check out how they look:

GYM 1: Absolute fitness (Sunway Carnival Mall, Seberang Jaya)

I just trespassed visited the gym twice. It was the first time I had entered and experienced the so called high class gym. I was amazed by the setup and environment of the gym. It was the gym that I would place
my money and heart in it. Unfortunately, I'm still jobless and hence, could only watch from the side. Absolute fitness have a total of five gyms in Penang (Only in Penang aiyoh~)

The cardio area. There are many screens with different channels. Marvelous for those using the treadmills and bicycles.

The cardio area. Not bad actually. Quite fully equipped.

If I'm able to work in Penang permanently and choose a gym, this would be my ultimate choice =) Looking forward to that day.

Membership price: RM75-RM115

GYM 2: Global fitness gym (Jalan Masjid Negeri - or so called Greenlane)

The look from the outside

Barbells and dumbbells

Cardio machines

Generally the gym was cosy and quite fully equipped. The inside was air-conditioned with dim lightings. I personally like this gym but it takes me 15 minutes to reach (without jam). However, due to mismanagement it has closed down. Full stop.

Membership price: out of service

GYM 3: Jatomi fitness (7th floor Gurney Plaza)

Jatomi Penang Branch is located inside Gurney Plaza, the popular shopping mall in town. As it is located in a high-class mall, one can expect it to be quite up to standards.

The weight's area. Pretty impressive huh? This is just part of the area.

Cardio machines, also part of it. At the end is the body studio where classes are conducted. The boast a variety of classes, from the relaxing Zumba and Yoga to the strenuous Body Step and Body Pump. I have posted on one of the classes earlier in my blog. It's about body pump. You may be interested to look at their classes schedules on their website

The cross fit area where group classes are conducted. Otherwise, most people use this place for abs exercises.

After being drenched in sweat, the best ever thing a gym can offer is a well equipped changing room. Jatomi has it. Their lockers are locked using the same wristband u check in the club. Frankly speaking, this is the part I look forward the most after an intense workout - take a soothing bath and get really refreshed. This is the best gym I've patronised so far.

Jatomi also operates in Petaling Jaya, KL and Johor Bahru. For more details, check it out on their website

Membership price: RM85-115

GYM 4: Orient fitness (Jalan Perak Branch)

It was quite hard to spot this. Just remember that it's just above SenHeng Perak Road.

Weights section

Cardio section

The sad part of this gym is the lack of air-condition (it is open-windowed with fans) and the distance from my house (5.5km is considered far in Penang). The toilet/bathroom is also not exciting. Never thought o f having my shower before going home. Aside from that, it was very well equipped with all types of machines and weights for different parts of the body. There are also two other branches in Penang, which can be found on their facebook website.

Membership price: RM 66.50

There is one more gym located opposite this Orient fitness. It seemed that gyms were everywhere and I was frantically looking for one as soon as I stepped back to Penang, as though there were only a bunch of them. I bet there would be more in town. It's just that they do not appear on Groupon.

Overall, I still loved the conducive and relaxed atmosphere of Absolute Fitness and Jatomi Fitness. Those were the high class gyms that I would subscribe to once I get my hands on my paycheck. But Absolute Fitness would be my first choice due to the cheaper price and also more outlets in Penang Island. Looking forward to being a member in Absolute Fitness =)

Cameron highlands

It was quite a sudden that we planned to go to Cameron Highlands. I opted for the Simpang Pulai-Blue Valley-Brinchang route as it was less winding. The Tapah route is shorter but it would be quite torturing for the passengers.

As this was the first time I was heading to Cameron Highlands with 4 other friends, finding a suitable (cheap and nice) apartment was quite challenging. We decided on The Snooze Apartment Cameron Highlands. It was a wonderful apartment which was VERY clean and comfortable. 3 rooms with 5 beds. [I'm seriously pretty lazy to type. Let the pictures do the talking ;) ]

Snooze Apartment Cameron Highlands. The living room. Spacious and comfortable. There were 3 power points but it is advisable to bring along your extension cords, just in case. I was glad I had two, as I was boiling water and using the steamboat pot at the same time. There were no immediate power points next to the dining hall.

One of the rooms. Queen sized bed

You can book your room by contacting Snooze Cameron Highlands at - https://www.facebook.com/SnoozeCH. Their unit is located in Desa Anthurium Apartment. Payment is done through bank in. I did not meet the person in charge at all through out the stay. Everything is done through email and facebook. Very convenient.

Day 1 steamboat - herbal soup. We brought along the steamboat pot as they did not provide any for us. There were a few pots there but it was not clean so we discarded the idea of boiling the soup beforehand. As we boiled the ingredients, the soup became less in herbal taste but luckily the vegetable sweetness managed to cover up the defect. We brought along some fishballs, meatballs, crabsticks, sausages and stuff using a cooler box. The vegetables were obtained from the local market in Kea's Farm.

Day 2: The journey started off with us heading towards the BOH tea plantation. It was around a 45 minute drive from our apartment. (20 mins to the foothill, another 25 mins to the hilltop)

BOH tea plantation. It was a tough climb for the car. The road was very bumpy with lots of holes. Apparently it hasn't been tarred for some time. This was taken at the view's point.

Please make sure you are fit before you climb. You might break some sweat as you ascend the slope. You may take it as quite a good exercise.

It was the first time I visited this tea plantation, with the previous visits to the Bharat tea farm. Compared to the Bharat tea farm, this BOH tea plantation (not the Sungai Palas one, which we did not go) is bigger and situated on the slopes of the hills. There is a tea factory in which you will be able to witness the process of processing tea leaves. On the other hand, the Bharat tea plantation promises you a better scenery and a easy walkabout.

Yeay in the middle of the tea farm!

                     Selfie time!                                                         Down memory lane

We proceeded to the bee farm which was just located at the foothill. How big is this Sunflower from Bee Farm?

This big!!

Day 2 steamboat. This time it's tomyam based =)

We were lucky that the weather was quite kind to us as it did not rain that night. Prior to that it was cloudy and drizzling here and there. Hence, we were able to visit the Brinchang night market, which operates every Friday and Saturday night. My apologies for not having any pictures taken >_<

Day 3: We checked out early and left the apartment. We stopped by a few places before departing Cameron Highlands.

The Smokehouse. Great architecture mimicking the English. It was cozy and looked awesome from the outside. This was the closest I managed to get as non-guests were not allowed to enter even the compound.

Rose centre. Very worth the RM5 per person.

Buddies forever; friends forever

I'm high flying !

We ended the three day two night escape feeling refreshed and satisfied. The sumptuous steamboat meals, the picturesque scenery and a stronger friendship would certainly go down the memory lane as we head back to our respective hometowns with different challenges awaiting us.
